The Irish Civil Service in Numbers

Sometimes re-reading fusty old reports or plans can throw up interesting figures.  Going back over the Government’s  ‘Civil Service Renewal Plan’ launched last October, I came across the following interesting numbers  :

  • €53 Bn - the level of expenditure managed by the Civil Service in 2013
  • <2% - the size of the Civil Service as a proportion of the total national workforce
  • 7.6 - the size of the Civil Service per 1,000 in the population, (compared to 8.4 per  1,000 in 1994)
  • 2.1mthe number of applications processed by staff in the Department of Social Protection in 2013
  • €0.5Bn - Collected in non- compliance by the Revenue Commissioners in 2013
  • 387,000 - the number of changes made to the Land Registry by the staff of the Property Registration Authority in 2013
  • 630,000 - the number of passports issued by staff in the Passport Office in 2013
  • 2477 - the number of meetings and events supported by the Civil Service in the 6 months of Ireland’s EU Presidency in 2013

I think these figures paint a picture of an efficient, hard working group of people.  It is an impressive list of which Civil Servants can be proud.
